PHILLY.COM RAVES ABOUT LYNN LEVIN'S MISS PLASTIQUE

March 21, 2013 review by Amanda V. Wagner:

"You may be surprised to hear this but poets are still around. Yes, a few survived influenza in the 16th century, and are now conquering contemporary culture with the same weapons poets have always used: words. Lynn Levin is one of those modern poets. Levin’s latest book, Miss Plastique, takes on the complications of female identity and views of feminine beauty..."

GET READY FOR THE ARRIVAL OF OUR LATEST TITLE:
Miss Plastique ~ POEMS BY LYNN LEVIN

Lynn Levin author of Miss PlastiqueMiss Plastique, the fourth full-length poetry collection by Lynn Levin, invites the reader into a world of female bravado in which Miss Plastique and her many selves rant, fret, joke, fall in love, dress up, and do their hair. A poet known for her eclecticism, humor, and range of poetic styles, Levin is also a writer and literary translator.  She teaches at Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania.

"A chewy, sour-sweet bon-bon of a book.  Miss Plastique is a many-minded feminist heroine who casts her gimlet-eye on childhood, marriage, and the myriad ways society [or life] conspires to thwart our  pleasures and ambitions."
——Vasiliki Katsarou, author of Memento Tsunami

"Miss Plastique is a busy girl: giving it to her enemy in stiletto heels, giving it up to an Elvis impersonator, thumbing a ride across Texas. She has turned from the mirror and can’t look back. She’s sexy and seductive and refuses to be pinned down; she’s silk so fluid you could drink her—read her instead, but watch she doesn’t explode in your hands."
——Meg Kearney, author of Home By Now

"The poems in Lynn Levin’s Miss Plastique hold their tension between fantasy and devastation."
——Jill Alexander Essbaum, author of Necropolis

"This book is just as explosive as plastique and packed as tightly and with the impeccable craft you’d expect from a good detonation expert. Lynn Levin has the perfect timing and sensitive touch of one who works with volatile materials—an Elvis impersonator, the Beav and Eddie Haskell, Gaspara Stampa, Eve and Lilith at Macy’s. We are better for the aftershocks of this verse."
——Christopher Bursk, author of The Improbable Swervings of Atoms

READINGS FROM A NEW COLLECTION BY VASILIKI KATSAROU
Saturday, October 22nd and Thursday, October 27th

Memento-Tsunami-Cover-9-18

"Reading Vasiliki Katsarou’s poetry is like watching an exquisitely made film: so beautiful are the images moving through time that you want to pause and let your eyes luxuriate over each frame; so beautiful is the music that you don’t want the movement to stop."

That's what poet Aliki Barnstone had to say after reading Memento Tsunami, the new  collection of poems by Vasiliki Katsarou. There will be two opportunities to hear Vasiliki read this October, and to purchase the collection. Come hear the music of her words:

katsarousmMEMENTO TSUNAMI, Vasiliki Katsarou’s first collection of poetry, will be published by Ragged Sky Press in Fall 2011.  MEMENTO TSUNAMI is a collection marked by startling abstract and lyrical poems that draw from a wide variety of cultural influences.  These include her Greek heritage, background in European filmmaking, as well as a childhood among the ghosts of New England Transcendentalism.  Katsarou’s work reflects a nostalgia for origins as well as a 21st-century visionary impulse to reconcile disparate worlds.

This Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 6pm Vasiliki Katsarou reads at The Cornelia St. Cafe in the West Village with Dean Kostos, Angelo Verga, Sharon Olinka and George Wallace.

New Book by Lorraine Henrie Lins
EHWD poet Lorraine Henrie Lins announces her new chapbook, "I Called It Swimming," published by Finishing Line Press.
A super review: "This amazing book creates a synthesis between land and sea, desire and conformity. It’s like she opens the windows of her life to let you look at her struggles to remain whole, and then closes them gently, so as not to get dust in your eye. It’s a brave, guided tour of her world.  Lins is the new docent of poetry – she has the talent to make her experience sound new.”
--Hal Sirowitz, Former Poet Laureate of Queens, NY and author of:  Mother Said, Before, During and After, and Father Said

REVIEW OF EATING HER WEDDING DRESS

Stellar review of Eating Her Wedding Dress: A Collection of Clothing Poems in today's Cutbank Poetry Review blog.

The reviewer, Jane Dobija of Corridors Magazine gives careful treatment of many of our poets' works--make sure you look for yourselves inside! Here are the opening lines of the review:

"Clothes are the poems that we wear. The billowing skirts, sculpted suits, and scruffy t-shirts in which we parade around tell even the slightly attentive observer about our histories, our hang-ups, and our lies. The subject of costume’s power, universal and unchecked, struck the mother lode with Maxine Kumin, Paul Muldoon, Margaret Atwood, Billy Collins, and nearly one hundred more accomplished poets, who contributed to a new anthology from Raggedy Sky Press called Eating Her Wedding Dress: A Collection of Clothing Poems. In their allotted pages, these writers explore the meaning of dress as symbol, history, and personal fate. They do so with a wit and wisdom that makes usually bitter truth telling palatable."
